Background of the study
Igbo proverbs are integral to cultural expression, encapsulating moral lessons and societal values. Their semantic interpretation, however, is deeply influenced by the cultural context in which they are used. In Enugu, where traditional and modern influences intersect, the meanings of Igbo proverbs may shift depending on social, economic, and political factors. This study examines how cultural context shapes the semantic interpretation of Igbo proverbs, exploring variations in meaning among different age groups and social strata (Nwachukwu, 2023). Ethnographic observations and focus group discussions reveal that proverbs often carry layered meanings, with interpretations evolving as cultural norms change. These shifts can affect how proverbs are used in everyday communication and in formal discourse. The research employs qualitative content analysis to compare traditional interpretations with contemporary usage, aiming to capture the dynamic relationship between cultural context and semantic meaning (Chinwe, 2024). By documenting these variations, the study contributes to a broader understanding of language change and the resilience of cultural expressions in the face of modernization.
Statement of the problem
While Igbo proverbs are recognized for their cultural richness, there is a paucity of research on how shifting cultural contexts in Enugu affect their semantic interpretation. Preliminary evidence suggests that varying interpretations may lead to inconsistencies in usage and understanding, thereby undermining their traditional communicative function (Eze, 2023). This study aims to fill this gap by systematically analyzing the influence of cultural context on proverb semantics.
Objectives of the study

  • To document the range of semantic interpretations of Igbo proverbs.
  • To analyze the influence of cultural context on these interpretations.
  • To propose measures to harmonize traditional and modern understandings.
    Research questions
  • How does cultural context influence the meaning of Igbo proverbs?
  • What differences exist in proverb interpretation among various social groups?
  • How can consistency in semantic interpretation be achieved?
    Significance of the study
This study is significant as it elucidates the impact of cultural context on the meaning of Igbo proverbs. Its findings will inform educators, cultural custodians, and linguists, aiding in the preservation and effective transmission of cultural heritage through language (Ike, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to analyzing the effect of cultural context on the semantic interpretation of Igbo proverbs in Enugu. It does not include other literary forms or regions.
    Definitions of terms
